Curriculum

The ELD teachers (English Language Development) work with English Language Learners (ELLs). We work with students either in their classrooms (SEI - Sheltered English Immersion) or in small pull-out groups. We help develop students’ English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing utilizing academic content such as Math, English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.

Teaching
Students
At Dunning, we align our ELD curriculum to reflect the five standards developed by WIDA. These standards are designed to adress social and instructional language, the language of Language Arts, the language of Mathematics, the language of Science, and the language of Social Studies. All of the WIDA Standards are explicitly connected to the state and national standards practiced in every elementary classroooms.

ACCESS
Testing
Each January, ELD students grades K-5 partake in an assessment to determine their English language development. The ACCESS test is designed by WIDA to assess the language development achienved by each student. The ACCESS gives teachers and administrators the ability to assess students on their growth in each of the four domains: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing in English. This test does not assess content knowledge, but rather uses content-based questions which designed to ensure that students are able effectively use instructional and academic language used in the classroom. Students are given a score between 1 and 6, depending on their level of English Language Development. Scores are sent home in June.
